Bait

What the fish thinks it is eating.

platformoptional stage8 parts

Bait weight has to sit inside the rod’s casting window, and its running depth has to intersect where the fish actually is. Those two constraints kill most bad lure choices before you buy them.

Every option, with the tradeoff

The table says what each part is. This says what it costs you to choose it.

lure.platformvalue

Gary Yamamoto Senko Soft Stickbait

A salt-impregnated plastic stick with no action designed into it at all. It just shimmies as it sinks, and bass cannot leave it alone.

tradeoff Soft enough that one fish destroys one bait. Budget for that or fish a tougher plastic.

lure.platformbudget

Zoom Trick Worm

Six inches of straight-tail worm. Texas-rigged, wacky-rigged, or on a shaky head, this is the highest-percentage bass plastic ever made.

tradeoff It needs a hook and often a weight. Fished alone it is a piece of rubber.

lure.platformvalue

Strike King KVD Squarebill Crankbait

The square lip makes it deflect off cover instead of hanging on it, and that deflection is the strike trigger. Shallow water reaction bait.

tradeoff Comes with treble hooks — problematic in barbless fisheries and hard on fish you plan to release.

lure.platformvalue

Mepps Aglia Inline Spinner

A spinning blade on a straight wire. Nothing catches more different species with less skill required — cast it out, wind it back.

tradeoff Inline spinners generate serious line twist. Without a ball-bearing swivel your line becomes a slinky within an hour.

lure.platformbudget

Acme Kastmaster Spoon

A machined chunk of brass that casts like a bullet and flutters on the fall. Trout, bass, stripers, and mackerel all eat it.

tradeoff Dense enough to cast a mile, which means it sinks fast — in shallow water you are retrieving instantly or dragging bottom.

lure.platformvalue

Z-Man Trout Eye Jighead

A weighted hook with the eyes molded on. Add a soft plastic and you have the single most effective inshore presentation there is.

tradeoff Jighead weight is fixed, so changing depth means changing the whole head. Carry three weights of the same size.

lure.platformvalue

Heddon Zara Spook Topwater

The original walk-the-dog bait. Rhythmic rod twitches make it swing side to side on the surface, and the strike is the reason people fish.

tradeoff Surface-only, so it is useless whenever fish are deep. And you will miss a lot of blowups — that is part of the deal.

lure.platformvalue

Berkley Gulp! Shrimp

Scent-soaked synthetic bait that genuinely works when live shrimp is unavailable. Reds, specks, and flounder eat it without hesitation.

tradeoff The scent is the product, and it evaporates. Once a piece dries out on the deck it is no better than plain plastic.
