Mainline

Everything on the spool. Diameter matters more than test.

connectionrequired stage8 parts

Line test is what it holds; line diameter is what the reel, the guides, the current, and the fish all actually deal with. 30 lb braid can be thinner than 8 lb mono. Pick the diameter that fits the reel, then check the test is enough.

Every option, with the tradeoff

The table says what each part is. This says what it costs you to choose it.

mainline.connectionvalue

PowerPro Spectra Braided Line

The braid most people mean when they say braid. Round, tough, and thin — 30 lb PowerPro is roughly the diameter of 8 lb mono.

tradeoff Zero stretch means zero forgiveness: every head-shake goes straight to the hook hole. And it is highly visible, so clear water wants a leader.

mainline.connectionpremium

Sufix 832 Advanced Superline

Eight carriers including a GORE fibre, which makes it noticeably quieter through the guides and more abrasion-resistant than standard braid.

tradeoff A few dollars more per spool and the colour fades faster. The abrasion gain is real but it is still braid — it is not a leader.

mainline.connectionpremium

Daiwa J-Braid Grand x8

Eight-strand braid with a coating that makes it genuinely slick — it casts further than round braid at the same test and handles beautifully.

tradeoff Slick braid slips more on knots. Add wraps to your uni, or tie an FG, or it will pull through under load.

mainline.connectionbudget

Berkley Trilene XL Monofilament

Smooth, limp, cheap mono. For a beginner filling a first spinning reel this is genuinely the right answer, and it forgives a lot of mistakes.

tradeoff Stretches, holds memory off the spool, and degrades in UV. Plan on respooling every season, which at this price is nothing.

mainline.connectionbudget

Berkley Trilene Big Game

Heavy, tough, high-stretch mono sold in bulk spools. The default for surf rods, catfish, and anywhere you need shock absorption over sensitivity.

tradeoff Thick and stretchy. At 40 lb you are running nearly 0.6 mm through your guides, which costs real casting distance.

mainline.connectionpremium

Seaguar InvizX Fluorocarbon

Fluorocarbon soft enough to fill a whole spool with. Sinks, hides, and gives you fluoro properties without needing a leader knot at all.

tradeoff Fluoro has memory and does not love spinning reels — it wants to jump off the spool. Baitcasters handle it far better.

mainline.connectionbudget

Berkley Vanish Fluorocarbon

The affordable way to try fluorocarbon as a mainline. Sinks and hides well enough to notice the difference on clear-water spinning gear.

tradeoff Stiffer and more memory-prone than premium fluoro. It will spring off a spinning spool in cold weather.

mainline.connectionvalue

Stren Original Copolymer

A blend that splits the difference: less stretch than straight mono, more manageable than fluoro, and cheap enough to respool often.

tradeoff A compromise in both directions. If you know you want sensitivity, buy braid; if you want invisibility, buy fluoro.
