How deep you can go and how hard you slip.
Depth rating is the obvious number; sole material is the one that actually hurts. Felt grips slick algae-covered rock and is banned in some states for spreading invasives. Studded rubber is the compromise.

Frogg Toggs Hellbender Chest Waders
Breathable stockingfoot chest waders at a price that makes the category accessible. Fits a wading belt, takes a separate boot.
tradeoff Stockingfoot means you also need boots, which the price does not include. Seams are the first thing to leak.
Simms Freestone Stockingfoot Waders
Four-layer breathable with reinforced seams and a real gravel guard. These survive years of freestone rock that shreds cheaper waders.
tradeoff Three times the Hellbender. The math works only if you wade more than about twenty days a year.
Hodgman Mackenzie Nylon Hip Waders
Thigh-high bootfoot waders for small creeks and muddy banks. Cooler than chest waders and far quicker to get in and out of.
tradeoff Hip height caps you at about knee-deep safely. One step into a hole and you are wearing a bucket.
Muck Boot Wetland Rubber Boots
Neoprene-lined mud boots that pull on and off with wet hands. The right footwear for a pond bank, a jon boat, or a muddy launch ramp.
tradeoff Sixteen inches of boot is not waders. Fine for mud and ankle-deep water, useless the moment you actually wade.
Korkers Devil's Canyon Wading Boots
Interchangeable soles: run felt where it is legal, studded rubber where it is not, and swap in about a minute at the truck.
tradeoff The BOA lacing and sole system are more parts to fail. And felt is banned in several states for spreading invasive species — check first.
